I’m not really one for mantras, but if there’s one thing I mutter to myself on repeat it’s “if not you, then who?”. (That and “what would a man do in this situation?” but that’s for another time.)
It’s easy to talk yourself out of opportunities by thinking “I’m not the right person for this”, even if it’s something you’d really like to do. Maybe you’ve never been to that destination before; maybe you know that so-and-so is usually the go-to person for that kind of feature; maybe you just don’t think you’re good enough.
It’s been almost three years since I accepted a writing gig that changed the course of my career. On the research trip for that book, I was driving down a staggeringly beautiful Highland road when an idea for another book came into my head. The more I thought about it, the more I knew it was a great idea – the more I knew it was a book that needed to be written.
